WHY WILL YE DIE?

Do you find this to be a strange title? Why would anyone will to die? In the book of Jeremiah we read of a whole nation which chose to die. God had determined judgment upon the sins of Israel (and surrounding nations) by subjugating them to Babylon. If they would not submit they would be killed by the sword, famine and pestilence. Their prophets gave contrary counsel. Then God asked, "Why will ye die . . ." (Jeremiah 27:13)? By submitting to God they could escape death.

A similar choice is to be made regarding spiritual death. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, "And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1). The redeemed Ephesians had been spiritually dead because of their sins, but had received God's remedy for sins and were alive. They had chosen not to die. That same condition and choice is assigned to all, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

God's remedy for sin and death is the substitutionary atoning death of Jesus Christ. If anyone under the penalty of eternal death repents of sin and trusts Jesus Christ as personal Savior, God in His mercy and grace immediately gives eternal life. But, unbelievable as it may seem, Jesus said to His people, Israel, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come unto me that ye might have life" (John 5:39, 40). Why would they chose to die?

Dear reader, without Christ as your Savior, you, too, are appointed to eternal death. Christ has died for you, paid the penalty of your sin, and offers you eternal life if you will but receive Him as your Savior. Then, why will ye die?
