The Door Is Before You
A door is a means of access. It may be viewed literally as a means of entering a building or a room. It may be viewed figuratively as "a door of opportunity." A door is a means of access.
In the tenth chapter of the Gospel of John the Lord Jesus Christ gave a parable. It was about shepherds, and sheep and sheep folds. In the parable He identifies Himself as the good shepherd Who gives His life for the sheep, laying it down and taking it up again. Obviously this is reference to His death on the cross and His subsequent resurrection. He knows the sheep, cares for them and provides safety for them. His hearers are obviously to be considered the sheep.
He also speaks of thieves, and robbers and hirelings. They all have ulterior motives regarding the sheep and certainly do not care for them as would the owner and shepherd of the sheep.
In the midst of this parable, the Lord Jesus refers to Himself: ". . . Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep" (John 10:7). Thus He presents Himself as the means of access into the place of safety provided by the good shepherd.
He amplifies this idea in John 10:9 when He says, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture." He promises salvation, safety and continuing provision of the needs for spiritual life. Note that the promise is to "any man" who would recognize his need of this salvation and provision. Are you such a needy soul who is groping for the door? The door is before you!
But would you note also that one important word is repeated in both references. In both references Jesus claims that He is "THE door." Not one door among many. Not one door perhaps more popular than another. Not one door easily passed while looking for one more appealing. He is THE only available, THE only acceptable door, by which men can enter Gods place of safety in this life and in eternity.
John 10:19 says that there was a division among the Jews because of these sayings. It has ever been so and is so today. Some will agree with the theme of this article. Many will disagree and others will merely doubt, not knowing for sure what to believe. May I remind you that Jesus, the Son of God, Who cannot lie, has set Himself before you? He has identified Himself as the door to eternal life and safety. Thus, the door is before you. But you must enter the door! Receive Christ today by faith and receive the life and provision so freely offered.
