The President of our nation is accused of immoral conduct. Several elected officials have been accused of wrongful campaign fund raising. Some appointed officials are serving time in prison for illegal activities while "serving the people", which is what all governmental employees are supposed to do. Little boys shoot and kill some of their school mates and a teacher. Teachers are accused and tried for seducing some of their students, and even bearing their children. What is happening in our nation, which was once known as "Christian America"?
Equally bewildering is the lack of concern for some of these activities. There seems to be far greater concern expressed when someone suggests that we need to renew our moral standards and hold ourselves and our society accountable to them. The ACLU even sues a judge in Alabama for hanging a plaque with the Ten Commandments on his court room wall. How dare he try to impose his standards upon the rest of the citizens of Alabama!
Apparently we should not want moral standards. However, we want drug manufacturers and doctors to have standards. We want meat packers and vegetable growers to have standards. We want our stock brokers and journalists to have standards. But how do we have standards in these areas if there is no standard of morality in the public servant, manufacturer, broker or health care worker?
Read the Ten Commandments again. They are found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. They are very basic and are elaborated upon throughout the Bible, God's Word. In the New Testament the Lord Jesus Christ makes them a matter of the heart, not just of physical action. But think of the basics. For example, "Thou Shalt not commit adultery." If obeyed, the White House might not be such a dangerous place to work or visit. "Thou shalt not steal." That might keep your broker and merchant trustworthy, if they kept it. "Thou shalt not bear false witness." With that you might be able to believe what you read in the paper, if your favorite reporter was held to it. Make your own applications as you read the Commandments.
The Bible has been a very reliable source of moral uprightness for our nation during its entire history. It has served us well. We are in moral trouble now because we have abandoned it. The founders of our nation intended that we be free from religious coercion, not from religious influence. Let us get back to our moorings.
