One day in the second week of June, 1998, Paul Harvey reported that the Supreme Court of the State of Washington had decreed that it is legally permissible for a politician to lie. We all knew that they often do it, but we didn't expect that they would be given a court's OK to do it.
Just two days later, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Dr. Michael Swango, accused of killing a number of patients while at the OSU Hospitals, was sentenced to several years in jail, not for murder, but for lying on a job application. A politician lies to get a job and it is approved by the Supreme Court of Washington; a doctor lies to get a job and goes to jail. Your figure that one out.
While you are figuring it out, consider this. There is a court much higher than the Washington Supreme Court. The Judge on that court has said, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" (Exodus 20:16). To break that commandment makes one liable for judgment as a transgressor of God's moral law. While Washington's Supreme Court may say that it is all right to do so, they are not the final court to decide the case. That final decision is in the hands of God.
Let us view the actions in that court room. "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, . . . And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. . . . and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:11-15)
The Washington Supreme Court decision to the contrary notwithstanding, the politician will not escape God's judgment unless he trusts Christ alone as his Savior from sin. Michael Swango will have another day in court and will not escape unless his name is in the Lamb's book of life. You, too, will face that great white throne of judgment and receive its final condemnation unless you have accepted Jesus Christ as your own personal Savior Who alone has the right to place your name in His book of life. Trust Him today; tomorrow may be too late!
