MAJORING IN MINORS

We humans spend a lot of time and money to remedy lost causes. Our cosmetic and health food bills are staggering. Still we are wrinkling and aging. Medical and surgical costs often bankrupt us, but still we weaken and will ultimately die. I do not mean to imply that we should not try to look good and be healthy as long as possible. What I am suggesting is that these are minor considerations.

The Bible has informed us that ". . . as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without (apart from) sin unto salvation" (Hebrews 9:27, 28). Death is an unavoidable appointment, but we go to any length to avoid it. After death is the judgment, and we do nothing to prepare for it. Does it not appear that we are majoring in minors?

We can, of course, do nothing to eliminate death; it is appointed unto man once to die. But we can escape the judgment. Christ was offered by God as the sacrifice for our sins. He bore those sins upon the cross of Calvary, paying the consequences of our sins (death) that God might have grounds upon which to forgive the sinner and grant him eternal life beyond the grave. The judgment was not eliminated; it was meted out upon our substitute to God's fullest satisfaction that we might go free.

Since the above is true, why do we spend such resources as we have to stave off the inevitable but do nothing about salvation which is absolutely free? Romans 6:23 tells us, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." We deserve the death that awaits us. And, yes, we deserve the judgment to follow, but by God's infinite grace He has provided the free gift of salvation through simple faith in the finished work of His Son upon Calvary.

If you are willing to spend yourself into poverty to preserve physical life for a short time, why will you not receive God's free offer of justification rather than judgment? ". . . Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house (Acts 16:31).
