If You Were God . . .

Suppose that you were God. You allowed some of your people to found a new nation on Biblical principles and you saw them provide freedom to worship you. You gave them a land overflowing with natural resources. It had an ideal climate for food production and you prospered them like few other nations. They later turned from you in many very obvious ways. If you were God, what would you do?

You gave those people a set of commandments by which to judge their moral conduct. They built an excellent system of justice upon them. But later a court in the "Bible Belt" ordered a judge to remove those commandments from the wall of his court room. If you were God, what would you do?

In those commandments you told those people that they were not to commit murder. Many years after the founding of their nation their Supreme Court decreed the legal right for women to kill their unborn infants even through an unmerciful "partial-birth abortion." If you were God, what would you do?

In those commandments you told those people that they were not to bear false witness. In later years of their history some sixty per cent of their youth admitted to lying and cheating on school exams. The people elected a President who obviously lied under oath and obstructed justice and was impeached for those crimes. Their elected senate acquitted him because he was yet popular with nearly seventy per cent of the people. If you were God, what would you do?

You told those people in your Word that you hated divorce, but that because of the hardness of the human heart you allowed it. They presumed upon your mercy and since nearly fifty per cent of their marriages ended in divorce anyway, they provided "no fault" divorce to make it easier to forsake a sacred vow. If you were God, what would you do?

If you are having trouble deciding what you would do, let me tell you what God says you would do if you were He: "The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God" (Psalm 9:16, 17). If God begins taking steps toward that end, you won't be surprised, will you?
