OUT OF THE HEART

The President of our nation is under investigation for a number of questionable activities. They cover a time period beginning when he was governor of Arkansas and running to the present. National polls tell us that what he does in his private life is his business and should not be considered when viewing the performance of his public duties. So long as the economy is good, we should leave him alone.

Is it proper to judge a man on the basis of his private life? God says in Proverbs 23:6, 7, "Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, . . . For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: . . ." The thoughts of a man's heart are about as private as one can get. It is in those secret recesses that the actions of life are formed. Whether those actions are performed in the home, at the office, on the golf course, or in the pew in church, they come from the heart and reveal its condition.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:35, "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things." Note again that the treasure of the heart is brought forth, for the character of the man will demonstrate itself in the actions of daily duties.

In Matthew 15:18-20 Jesus declares, "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man." Again it is obvious that the heart produces. It is not dormant in the public life. It executes in public what it plotted in private. That is the way it works.

We all have the problem to face and we all have a solution to consider. Let me close with several verses of Scripture without comment. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it" (Jeremiah 17:9)? "Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up (James 4:8, 10). "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts . . ." (I Peter 3:15). "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith . . ." (Hebrews 10:22). "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).
