Clothing, toys, electronics, appliances, gourmet cheese boxes and ties pretty well cover the average list of gifts for Christmas. One outstanding gift may rise to the rank of "the best gift I ever got." But that would not be the best gift ever given.
Some seven centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ, Isaiah the prophet declared of Him, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given . . . . (Isaiah 9:6). The apostle John reported the follow-up of that prophecy: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). That Son, in turn, gave His life upon the cross of Calvary as a sacrifice for the sins of the world so that a just God could have grounds for His forgiveness of our sins.
But to fully satisfy both the giver and the recipient, a gift must be received. So it is with this Son given. John again says it well: "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (John 1:10-12). God has offered His Son to you; it is up to you to receive Him.
The Apostle Paul sums it up clearly: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23). At Christmas time, you will receive a gift. It will be in a box, perhaps, and beautifully wrapped. But you receive the gift when you receive the package because the gift is inside the package. The gift of God is eternal life and that life is in His Son, Jesus Christ. You receive the life when you receive the Son by personal faith in Him and His sacrificial work upon the cross for you.
What better time could you find to receive this gift than this season when we remember the birth of God's Son? God's gift of eternal life has been extended to you. That life is in His Son, given for your redemption from sin. Accept the Son and receive the life today. This is the best gift you could ever receive.
