The Apostle Paul makes a startling observation in Romans 1:21-28. He indicates that all men at one time knew God but they put Him out of their mind and went their own willful and sinful way; and God let them. Let's see exactly what he said: "Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, . . . and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, . . . For this cause God gave them up to vile affections: . . And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which were not convenient."
God gave mankind the freedom to do what they wanted to do. But there was a price to pay. Romans 1:32 hints at the price: "Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death" . . . and Romans 6:23 boldly states the price: "For the wages of sin is death; . . ." Sinful man is free to sin, but at the end of the road is eternal death, separation from God, a dreadful consequence, indeed.
But Romans 6:23 concludes with an alternative for sinful mankind: ". . . but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." He, Jesus Christ, paid the price of our sin by dying in our place, bearing our sins in His own body as He died on the cross of Calvary. On the basis of that price paid, God, Who is just in demanding the death penalty for sin, can and does forgive and justify the sinner when he acknowledges his sin, repents of it, and receives, by faith, the Lord Jesus Christ as his own personal Savior.
How foolish to demand the freedom to sin and to flaunt your evil determinations. How foolish to ignore divine intervention and provision, racing on to judgment at the hands of a holy and almighty God. For your own sake, turn from your sins in genuine repentance and trust Christ today. It will prove to be the wisest decision you have ever made.
