Ordinarily no one volunteers to be a slave. We even have a phrase to describe that thought: "involuntary servitude."
Free men have great sympathy for slaves. In our nations history, the war between the states was fought to abolish the institution of slavery. Yet many of those who had been enslaved against their will, and set free by that war, chose to remain with their masters who had treated them well and whom they had learned to love. They chose to continue as slaves.
The unregenerate human being is a slave to his sinful nature. The Apostle Paul describes us in this way: ". . . ye were the servants of sin . . . ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity . . . ye were the servants of sin . . ." (Romans 6:17, 19, 20). The end result of that slavery is seen in verse 23: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
To those same Romans, Paul wrote, ". . . ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. . . . now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness" (Romans 6:17-19).
Did you notice that Paul admonishes a conscious yielding? Why? Listen to him again: "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness "(Romans 6:16)? As natural slaves to our sinful nature we willingly served that nature.
But by receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, we are free to serve Him and the principle of righteousness which He has imparted to us. We can choose to serve a new Master. He has provided life rather than death. It makes sense to transfer our allegiance. Why not exercise your option?
When the vast majority of Israelites were of a mind to forsake the Lord, Joshua declared his choice and admonished the Israelites to do the same: "And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). You would be wise to make the same choice.
