Many people are firmly convinced that there are many ways to approach God acceptably. They believe that there are many roads to Heaven. In fact, some will even say that all roads lead to Heaven and that everybody is going there, though by the different roads available.
God does not agree. Listen to the words of Jesus Christ, God's Son, Who came to reveal God and to redeem sinful man: "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13, 14).
Now many will argue that if the way to Heaven is not narrow, the view expressed by Jesus Christ and related here is certainly narrow! How can anyone be so firmly convinced that there is only one way to Heaven and only one Savior Who can redeem sinful men when there are so many sincere people who believe otherwise? I am so convinced simply because God said so.
If Jesus Christ is right when He said, ". . . I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6), how do you dare argue that there are multiple ways to Heaven? How do you dare dispute the very God Who is offended by your sin and Who has declared you to be on the wrong road? And, by the way, one's sincerity changes nothing.
Many of us are do-it-yourselfers. We repair our own cars, we build our own decks, we assemble our own computers, we sew our own clothes and we do our own taxes. We don't like to think of ourselves as helpless or insufficient. Many of our projects take a lot of work and we put the effort into them, and we are proud of our "work ethic." So, when it comes to salvation from sin, we will work for it; we will seek it along our chosen road. If there is no road that is suitable to us, we will just have to build our own road!
The words of Proverbs 14:12 are in total agreement with the words of the Lord Jesus quoted above: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." You do have the right to choose your own way. But if it is the wrong way, is it not wise to turn around? If we are unsure of the way, is it not wise to ask directions? (I know, ladies, that is another subject when it comes to husbands.) God Word, the Bible, is the approved road map with full directions to Heaven. Study the map, read the directions and take the right road. Jesus is "the way". Join the "few" and forsake the "many"; trust Him today.
